Dear Mother
Young Suh
“In ‘Dear Mother’ I go back into my body and try to answer this question. It is like stretching a rubber band—one end held into the future, and the other into the past. In the future I see the family I am making with my wife and my daughter—in the past my mother and father, and me and my brothers. I stretch them as far apart as possible without breaking.”
_Young Suh
In ‘Dear Mother’, Young Suh unravels his memories and feelings that were buried in his body. Through the photographs of his daughter, he projects an imperfect and fragile being trying to become a person. When his father was dying, Young Suh quarantined for two weeks with his mother in her house. They talked everyday. This book is about those two weeks, the conversations and daydreams. Written in Korean and English, the two languages convey individual yet cohesive stories that can be read together and individually.
‘Letters Home’ is an ongoing publication series composed of images and letters. Through this series, Young Suh talks about living in two homes in Korea and California, about fathers, husbands, mothers, and daughters. ‘Dear Mother’ is the first book of this series, made at home to be sent home. This book was printed in a limited edition of 100 copies and comes with an original print signed and dated by the artist.
