esquisse note
Hoon Lee
“As I walk, I sneak peeks at things: cement walls and pavement, dead plants, trash, electric cables, a construction site, a pile of dirt, lines and objects, traces of water soaked into the ground, etc. They rush by me, one by one, and there is no end to them. With an automatic camera I randomly photograph those trivial things, wandering homelessly. Eye-drawing without any narration, encircling the collective memories I hold.” _Hoon Lee
Hoon Lee’s ‘esquisse note’ contains photographs and drawings tracings of trivial things found in the alleyways of neglected cities. His methods of drawing with ink, water, and spit, and applying them with tissue, pieces of wood, brushes, and pencils, as well as his hands, Lee’s gestures attempt to capturing the spirit or essence of the figure through the act of drawing lines and dots, akin to the techniques of Korean traditional painting. The photographs and drawings, which he calls ‘eye-drawings,’ exist as discoveries, not as a means for imitation, exploring and negotiating this dichotomy. The book blurs the line between what is seen and what we perceive and presents a new visual way of unifying and finding the connection between distant objects.
