The Bluest Scene
Yunsoo Kim

As the vinyl layers overlap dozens to hundreds of times, the far-away blue abyss is revealed; according to the fine differences from the way the vinyl layers pile up, the abyss sometimes becomes the wind, sometimes the river, sometimes the mountains. At times, it draws landscapes that look like clouds and at times the desert, which is not fixed but always changing, appearing and disappearing... They become landscapes of ‘living life’ the feet had drawn, flowing to the bluest scene. _Yunsoo Kim

For Yunsoo Kim, blue is the color of things that gently blur the boundaries: the clouds in the sky, the winds in the air, the waves on the horizon, dawn, and the abyss. For a long time, the artist has used the color Ultramarine, which means ‘beyond the sea,’ to express the temporary and the invisible. ‘The Bluest Scene’ presents a body of sculptural work that began in 2003. Starting from foot outlines of close acquaintances, layers of transparent vinyl are stacked repeatedly with each new layer slightly shifting in shape. As a result, the final piece reveals a faint blue landscape resembling the movement of winds, mountains, waves, clouds, and deserts. Through writing, drawing, and sculpting, the artist reflects on her invisible connection with the world and learns to embrace the nature that surrounds her. This book is an artist notebook that looks back at the poetic fragments of the artist’s relationship and also an endearing letter to those who carry the essence of nature.
