NOTES
Alyssa Minahan
“‘NOTES’ is a visual poem about the impermanence of our lived experiences and the beauty to be found in its acceptance. When I began making this work, I had suffered a profound personal and physical loss. At the same time, I was seeking ways to describe the liminal period in my sons’ lives between boyhood and adolescence, specifically their emotional and physical independence from me as their mother. To give form and meaning to these experiences, I turned to the materiality of the photographic medium, creating objects that challenge established notions of process and permanence.” _Alyssa Minahan
Alyssa Minahan is an artist who constantly tries new ideas in her own way through various traditional photographic materials, including emulsion lifts, unfixed and partially fixed photograms, gelatin silver prints, film and chemigrams. The traces of light touching these photographic surfaces refer to fading memories or life, related to personal time, place, and inner memories of everyday life. ‘NOTES’ was completed using six types of inner paper to reproduce the texture of film and printing paper that imprints the image according to the amount of light. Each book has one unique photo object such as a polaroid, a lumen print, an emulsion lift, or a gelatin silver print.
